this is about hagel. what i find interesting, it was funny to hear john mccain say you are so anti-bush, and i wonder if there are a bunch of bush first term folks saying you remember a republican senator who used to say some anti-bush things. >> and just a quick note, chris calizza, the fact that frank -- what people expected him to do, which was to step down, he is the last world war ii veteran -- >> 89. >> 89 years old. as kelly points out. cory booker's presumptions, some some would say certainly latuenberg camp to presume that will he is -- is cory booker a shoe-in or is frank palone got some play with the democratic party, and is there really a primary? >> i think there will be a primary. i think at least initially frank palone is in the race. i think the pressure is he certainly has a certain amount of money. can he raise money against booker, who we expect will be able to raise money? i would say cory booker is prohibitive favorite maybe overstating that he is clearly a favorite. we have to see ho

hagel is at the center of it, but it's about much more than just chuck hagel. andrea. >> let me just interject also, kelly, that there is an issue here. the defense ministers meet at nato next week in brussels. they want chuck hagel, the administration wants chuck hagel, the new defense secretary to be leading this going forward. they don't want to have to ask leon panetta, who is still the defense secretary, to go and lead the delegation as a lame-duck. chris, this gets to entrance, and that's why, among other reasons, the white house is so frustrated, and those who have been raising these benghazi issues are really holding the white house hostage on when did the president call and was he up all night? those are the kinds of questions they've been asking. hagel had nothing to do with benghazi. >> absolutely true, andrea, but i would say, look, this is -- kelly used the phrase leverage point, and whether you like it or not, that's what republicans view this as. i would say that the white house has two very clear choices. they either say okay, we will give until

we continue to await action on hagel next week. in theory the pit fall is something comes out in the next couple of days that in some way disqualifies him. i know not one of the 15 republican senators who signed this letter asking president obama to withdraw chuck hagel as his nominee for secretary of defense held even a 1% hope that that would happen. they do not think that hagel is the right person on the right time. i do think it's worth noting is john mccain. we've talked about john mccain and chuck hagel. once very close friends. mccain during the chuck hagel confirmation hearing was one of the most poignant, maybe ted cruise was the most poignant, but one of the most pointed critics of haling. mccain not putting his name to that letter. it's -- this seems like a foregone conclusion here in that this is much more for the public record and for history's sake why this letter was sent. >> and one more thing. before we leave, hagel, is this whole stir yesterday where. >> did you take money from the friends of hamas? >> it's lake-e

i think this will highly impact -- i think chuck hagel should be confirmed. if he were a democrat -- is he actually a moderate conservative, but if he were a democrat and were no, ma'am made, would the republicans oppose him you should those circumstances because of his views? his views actually are quite consistent with those of president obama. we just got re-elected. i think that given a vote that he will be confirmed, and i think once confirmed he will serve many that capacity well. >> as a republican who has served in a democratic administration and precisely to have a bipartisan approach, which is what bill clinton wanted, and that was the model, the paradigm for what this president was trying to do with chuck hagel, but now how does he reach out to republicans who have clearly rejected him in large numbers and have been abusive some in the process? >> well, he will have to go to the hell and work with them, and they -- i assume they still are great patriots. even though they may disagree with chuck hagel that they don't want it this country to be compr

now lindsay graham wants i think every private thought that chuck hagel has ever ever had and every public word that he has ever uttered. look, i think it is shameful what he is having to go through on that side of this. they're not questions that are holding this up based on what his thoughts are on iraq or -- i'm sorry. not on iraq, but on afghanistan, but instead on stuff that's played out or in benghazi, which, quite frankly, he had nothing to do with. he was a private citizen. >> when we get to the budget issue, the president is coming out there, and approximate showing the dire consequences of what happens with this meat clever approach, as he said. republicans -- house and sfat are on recess, so there's certainly no negotiation going on even at staff level apparently right now. now what happens? we go to the next stage, which is the automatic cuts go into effect, and they start talking about a continuing resolution, and further kicking the can down the road? >> i do think -- i do think there will be an attempt and you saw this by the president, and you see the democrats in the senat
